Teng Teng sang an English number - Because of You. Judges commented that her way of singing is a little old-fashioned...Hmm..

Leonard sang This Love. Judges commented he needs to improve his stage presence to connect with the audience. He is still looking tight on stage!

Carissa - 蓝天 《实在歌手PK Challenge》
Carissa came as an external challenger! She was a last-min replacement, as the original challenger couldn't make it last min. With only 3 hours to prepare, and singing a song which she is not well-versed in (this is the song which the original challenger chose), she gave it all! Only 19 yrs old, she shown bravery in attempting a performance with minimal performing experience.

Most importantly, she won! Though she did not perfect the song, she won the judges over with her truthful, sincere delivery over her competitor, Cherry.

For many who are waiting for the Show Three Recap….here it comes!!!!!


SHOW 3 – 23 Mar 08
Last Sunday’s show theme was 自我风格… Thus, singers chose songs which reflected themselves or their styles...

A number of them chose English numbers…


Judges
The judges last sunday was Philip Lim (our veteran instructor in Hark Music), and Maggie Chua (Queen of MediaCorp Serial Drama Theme Songs - as the master host, Amos Teo preferred to refer her as. You see, she sang umpteen songs for MediaCorp serials…)… & of course, the participation of our 4 audiences judges for each PK Challenge – Eddie, Mandy, Weicai & Chris.

A Recap on Show 2 - 16 Mar 08
Last week, we saw the elimination of Aaron Yap. What’s going to happen this week? Left with, Teng Teng, Yingzhi, Leonard, Kenneth, Cherry, Tat Sin…these 6 REAL SINGERS .....

Who will be the one this week?



PK Set 1
Alex (external challenger) VS Kenneth

Alex is the external challenger last week which lost to Teng Teng in a really tight fight with difference of only 1 point. (Alex – 27; Teng Teng – 28). A really accomplished singer, the judges & audience invited him back for another round of challenge, based on his glorious score last week!

Our master host asked him that night on the singer he most wish to compete, and the singer he doesn’t wish to compete…..it all came out to be the same answer……

Haha, it’s like a 又爱又恨的feel. :)

Anyway, eventually, he drew out Kenneth as his opponent that night.

Alex – 趁早 VS Kenneth – Hello
趁早was a good opening to the show. With the demonstration of great power, good range, and feel, everyone was engrossed into the show… applauded him for his great performance. Judges had fairly good comments for him, except that they felt he might have appeared ‘too fierce’ in the chorus.

Kenneth sang Hello (Lionel Richie). His raspy, husky voice set a perfect scenario for the lonely, ‘drunken’ feel, right in a pub. Judges felt that he was able to bring out the English song well, compared to a Chinese song. However, song choice was a little something to think about, as the climax of the song was good enough to showcase much vocal abilities.

Result: Alex won! 27 points to 25 points! A good score for Kenneth too.

***So now, the external challenger has a choice.
External Challengers won and scored above 25 points have the option to take away the $200 CASH instantly, or ‘trade it’ to stay in the competition as part of ‘The REAL SINGER 班底’ and vie for the top prize of at least $1000 CASH + Prizes!

So, Alex got to make a choice.

He decided to stay on and compete! Yea….!!! We all say he has great potential for the TOP Prize. This is going to be a very exciting competition! Go, Alex, go!

PK SET 2
Tat Sin VS Teng Teng

Once Tat Sin knew he has picked up Teng Teng, he broke into hells of nerves, walked round in circles on stage! Hmmm…with such strong contender like Teng Teng, it was little wonder why he did that.

Tat Sin – 我怀念的 VS Teng Teng – Because of You
Tat Sin’s delivery was a little too ‘safe’... in a way where no impact was created. It was commented by the judges that the key was too low too.

Teng Teng’s English number was able to carry off with some conviction in the beginning… however, as the song proceeded on, the feel went a little flat. Yes, sure she was able to hit the high notes, but..… I guess it just couldn’t carry it off well. Judges commented that her way of singing was a little ‘old-fashioned’.

Anyways….

Result: Teng Teng won!

PK SET 3
Carissa (external challenger) VS Cherry

Oh… this was a dramatic thingy going on here….
The initial invited external challenger wasn’t Carissa. Something cropped up to the original challenger and it was a last-minute notice when she informed that she could not take part in this showcase competition! It was already 4pm++ on that day! OMG…Everyone got to think quick for alternatives….

“…It was already too late for the band to practice another new song…”
“…We could not carry on the show with only 7 performers…”
“… Who is ready??? At the moment of time?…..”

It was our luck that we managed to find Carissa - one of our performers in Hark Performing Team. She was pretty gamed to help us out, and probably it would help to gain her some experience too singing with a full live band and in such a atmosphere.

It was hard on her that she has to sing the original contender’s chosen song instead of her signature song, and of course, to memorise the lyrics & practice the song in just 3 hours!
It may seem easy of some of you…but to a girl who is just 19 yrs old???? With little stage experience? We were all admired by her courage!

"Ok...This is going to be a tough night...for her.."

Carissa – 蓝天 VS Cherry – 不痛
Cherry started off the challenge first. She sang 不痛. Her delivery lacked management & feel. There wasn’t a connection. Her vocals did not have enough 辨识度 too. Her tonal projection was constantly in the head range.

Carissa was next up. She lacked in having enough support to handle this wide-range song. It was nerve-wrecking, especially when the song needs to modulate up 1 key in the last chorus. Judges commented that it was pretty decent when she started the song, but it couldn’t sustain when proceeding into chorus. However, her voice expressions & emotions-filled voice were rather alluring to the audience. Pity was the lack of voice control when it climaxed.

Result: Carissa won! with a close fight!!!! Everyone CHEERED!!!!

Carissa was really uncaught aware of her win. It was a moment to remember, and a moment to be learnt. Just be truthful to yourself, and your performance, you will shine through. Even though Carissa lacked some vocal techniques to carry the big song well, she managed to woo the judges and the audience with her heartfelt performance - through her song management and feel.

So what can we learn from this?
When you do not treat the performance like a competition, & do not over-stress yourself, what you reap, will be much more than what you thought can be. Enjoying yourself is the REAL THING!

PK SET 4
Leonard VS Yingzhi

Leonard – This Love VS Yingzhi – Boulevard of Broken Dream
‘This Love’ suited Leonard very well, and he could deliver English numbers rather well. I say he still needs to improve his ‘natural’ on stage. Still looking tight up on stage, not thoroughly enjoying himself on stage, he did not managed to spread the joy, the beat, the ‘high’ of the song to everyone present. It was a pity… Leonard, 加油！Learn to enjoy yourself on stage, and feeling the high, high, HIGH~~~

Yingzhi sang a more acoustic version of the song, made popular by Green Day. I felt that this song was quite flat to begin with, and it could not show much of any vocal capabilities. It was quite neither here nor there kind of performance. It was quite pitchy all over the song too.


Result: Yingzhi won! It was a close fight. Really.

<实在歌手PK赛>: The 2nd Show (16th Mar 08)

The Actual Competition: Round 2

In this round, all the Real Singers will be singing Chinese golden oldies with a twist – They will modernise them with current pop styles! Hence, the audiences will be treated to a whole new listening experience.
Adding the excitement to the contest, a 加分题 (Bonus round) is instilled. All Real Singers will have to choose a special item( 才艺表演) to perform aside from singing.

For the judges of the night, we have Xin Yun, Philip Lim (both Hark Music Vocal Instructors) and 4 other judges from the crowd to decide the winner!


Hmm...Why are there “4 other judges from the crowd”? (you must be wondering..)
That is because, to add on to the excitement, in each PK Set, we will invite a volunteer from the audience to come out and be one of the judges! Exciting right?
So if you feel like being one of the judges... do drop by, for all you know, you will be one of them occupying the “HOT” seat!!


Alright, let's continue...
In this PK rounds, the host will first pick a name from a big red box, and the contestant picked will draw out his challenger/comrade’s name from the box.

The PK rounds that night were:

PK Set 1
AARON VS LEONARD

邓丽君 - 月亮代表我的心 (R&B style) VS 潘秀琼 - 情人的眼泪 (R&B style)

A tight tug between this 2 young boys doing the oldies in their usual R&B way.
Perhaps they can’t really connect with these oldies…judges commented that there was no connection between them & the songs.. Is ok guys, you always pick up a thing or two from these experience judges!!

Bonus Round:
Aaron, with zero to little dancing background, has decided to risk it all for the competition. He danced to a high tempo number by 罗志祥’- 精舞门. Commendable courage for Aaron!!
Leonard strummed and sing to Mayday’s(五月天) 温柔. Didn’t know he actually play so well on guitar. These people are so talented!!

Result : Leonard managed to edge past Aaron. Aaron dropped into “Danger Zone”


PK Set 2
TAT SIN VS CHERRY

崔萍 - 今宵多珍重 (Jazz style) VS 邓丽君 - 海韵 (Rock style)

Tat Sin in his usual self, displaying a goody boy image on stage. Would be good if he be more natural on stage. Jiayou!!
Cherry chose to sing海韵 (Rock style ) selected by her mum!! Haha, Filial daughter isn’t it?? She managed to dance a little with the rock song... Good if she can enhanced the song better with stronger body language. Nevertheless, after 4 singers’s performance, they have done much better than the 1st week!! 辛苦你们了!


Bonus Round:
Tat Sin overwhelmed the crowd with his keyboard and vocal presentation of Penny Dai’s(戴佩妮) Amen; and Cherry impressed all with her own composition (which is also an award-winning song in another song composing competition)

It was a tie when result was announced. So judges decided to have them to sing for another 15 seconds each, in acapella.
Luck was with Tat Sin, he grabbed 2 votes out of 3 from the judges.

WINNER: Tat Sin!


PK Set 3
In this round, the external challenger ALEX TAN was introduced. And he drew out…

Ting Ting!
(I can hear visible ‘phews’ from the contestants when this was revealed)

ALEX VS TING

张学友 - (Rock style) VS 陈淑桦 - 梦醒时分 (Rock Swing)

Wasted if you missed the show.. It was probably the climax of the show. Alex’s version of 吻别 showed the rest of the contestants what it takes to be a challenger. He wooed the crowd with overall display. .stage…vocal…etc

Ting Ting, another strong contender took on Alex with 梦醒时分 (Jazz style) She did not disappointed her supporters with her Jazz version too!!

Think the judges must be sweating over who to choose as winner for this PK set.

Bonus Round:
Both chose to飙高音! And they really HIT VERY VERY HIGH PITCH! And the crowd also gets very HIGH! Alex using 实音 hitting higher than the sky while Ting Ting chose to pitch herself the highest note with head voice (头音) She rocked the house!! They both sang +5,+6 keys above originals!!! OMG~~~

WINNER: Ting Ting scrapped through. Phew!! what a close one!!

P.S: Alex lost by a high high score of 27 out of 30!!!! All the other singers' score did not even come close...Ting Ting was just 1 point more of it. Thus, at the end of the show, after the judges' deliberation, and responses from the audience, an invitation was given to Alex to return to the competition, for another PK challenge next week. A loud, shouting wave must have prompted him to say 'YES!' as another week's challenger again!

Let's 期待 on his performance this sunday!

PK Round 4
KENNETH VS YING ZHI

苏芮 - 酒干倘卖无 (Rock style) VS 黄品源 - 你怎麼舍得我难过 (Rock style)

Kenneth did a hit song 酒干倘卖无, a popular song in the early 80s…think he was still a baby then!! Judges commented that his low notes were not clear enough. Hear that Kenneth??
Yingzhi lined up 你怎麼舍得我难过 for her challenge. She managed to sum up the song without much difficulties but judges felt that she lacks punches & groove for a rock number.. too ballad way of singing I supposed.


Bonus Round:
Both astounded the crowd with their very own compositions!
To be fair, both of them did better in Bonus round when their vocals were clearly heard.
Think gotta work more on vocal projection.. hehe, just my 2 cents worth.

WINNER: Kenneth!

It was 老歌新唱 theme... Alex sang 吻别 in ROCK, Tengteng sang 梦醒时分 in swing rock.... and their bonus round = 飙高音!!!

Wow wow… 2 rounds of the Real Singer Challenge Contest were held on 9th & 16th March Sunday 8.30pm respectively. Hope you enjoyed the competition so far. ^^ 6 more Sundays to go!!! :) For those who have missed the show…You guys missed it big time!!! :(

However, we will still let u have a feel of what had happened for the past 2 Sundays at Lunar Fusion Bar through this entry. Not enough through reading???? Be there in person to experience the LIVE factor!!! Support the singers encountering the External Challenger!!

Anyway, here's the recap of the 1st week...

Round 1 - My Signature Song (我的代表歌曲)

For the first round of the competition, each Real Singer was required to perform 2 signature songs, which encompass their life journey. They have to practice and perfect not 1, but TWO songs within ONE week! The songs that they have chosen were mostly well-received numbers..

As shown above, 1 of the songs will be performed with a live band, whereas the other will be presented with audio music (minus one).

And alas! That’s where the disaster strikes. Due to some technical errors, the vocal of the original artiste could not be muted!! (Or could it be yet another challenge from the organiser? :p) When the ‘mishap’ happened, the Real Singers (namely Kenneth, Ting Ting and Cherry) have no choice but to present their songs in Acappella.

Ironically, their awesome vocal without any music accompaniment seem to wow the crowd even more! 因祸得福 (deriving gain from misfortune). ^^

Audience participation - a voting system where audience can choose up to 3 of their favourite Real Singers among all. The results of the audience voting made up 30% of the total scoring for the nite while panel of judges take up balance 70%.

The first show is just a 'warm-up' show...soft launch show... the real real competition starts on ROUND 2.. EXCITING!!!

PK Challenges - What is it all about???

Yes, we have just held an audition this Saturday noon for external PK Challengers!

We have found a few potential singers, as the external challengers to PK (stands for Player Kill, only one will emerge as winner...)


Some of you may still be wondering on how the PK format thingy will be carried out, right??
Alright, here it comes.....



Starting with the 8 REAL Singers which we have found and formed to be the competition 班底, they will be facing eliminations every rounds....


The 1st Round has already started on 9th March, last Sunday.. The 8 singers has sung their 代表歌曲... And cruelly, one of them has been eliminated. The lowest score of the eight.

Coming this Sunday, at 2nd Round, an external challenger has been invited(mystery..mystery person..). The PK challenges will formally begins with this round!


Each singer will pick on a challenger, by drawing lots. (depends on their luck!) Thus, there will be 4 PK challenges altogether. (Provided that you don't know how to count...let me break it down for you. 7 REAL Singers left after 1st Round, right? + plus 1 external challenger. So, that makes 8. That simple. )


Each will sing a song which they have prepared and chosen to compete. (yes, with live band accompaniment.)


And.....other than that, one other VERY interesting element is that there is a 加分题!!! Ok, I know.. now you gonna ask me, what are they going to do for it right?


4 types for them to choose from:



1. 飙高音 - They will sing a section of a song, and the key will keep on increasing, increasing, increasing!!!! OMG~~~~



2. 跳舞 - I bet I do not need to elaborate more on this. You smart people will know what to expect, right? Haha...



3. 自创歌曲 - Present a self-composed song. Hmm, actually, in my opinion, this is the hardest to gain points and connect with the audience...anyways..



4. 弹乐器 - To let them show their other music talented side of them..other than just singing!



Ain't all these exciting????? And yes, all these will be taken into consideration for the judging.



Only 1 winner will emerge as the winner of the challenge. The result will be announced straight right after each challenge.


So, some simple calculation will tell you that there will be 4 losers..(sorry, I know this sounds a little crude..) These 4 losers will be in a 危险区. At the end of the show, the judges will deliberate and decide who shall leave that night.


Hmm...so, what about the external challenger???

If the external challenger is the one of the loser, he/she will not get the $200 CASH....(obviously)

If the external challenger wins, he/she can choose either:


1. Get $200 CASH instantly....


OR


2. Choose to stay in the competition, and be part of the 班底 to vie for the top prize of $1000CASH and Prizes!!!!!


Well, which means the external challenger can 'trade' or 'risk' his $200CASH for more prizes, and stay in the competition till the very last SHOWDOWN!


This will also means that if the external challenger choose to stay in the competition, there will be 2 eliminations instead of 1 elimination that night.


As the rounds goes on, there will be more external challengers coming in.....

So, GOT IT???

WOW wow WOW...Haha...even as I'm writing this, I am soo excited about it!

Lunar and Hark Music brings you Singapore’s first-ever Live Singing PK Challenge starting 9 March to 27 April 2008 on every Sunday night at Lunar Asian Fusion Bar.

So, what is this event all about?

Lunar and Hark Music brings you Singapore’s first-ever Live Singing PK Challenge starting 9 March 2008 to 27 April 2008 on every Sunday night at Lunar Asian Fusion Bar.

In 8 weeks, aside for having to perform live at a different theme every week, the 8 ‘Real Singers’ will also face tough competition in the PK (PK切磋赛) segment, where powerful singers from all over Singapore will contend with them to win cash prizes.

The organisers aim to provide an interactive singing ground where everyone has the freedom to express their views and at the same time, learn from one another.

Hence, besides comments given by the professional judges during the show, audience will also be invited to give their opinions on each singer.

How are the shows conducted?

The singers has to present the songs in the following themes.

From Show Three to Show Six, there will be extra PK Rounds from Challengers, all over Singapore.
