In 2010 - we introduced a 'revamped, improved' version of an exciting programme - Songwriter 2-Year Apprenticeship.

It deviates differently from the usual songwriting programmes you've seen out there, where weekly sessions just goes on and on.. (and probably not penning a song even in the 1st year!)

In this programme, you experience a Full-Day Boot Camp to tune up your musicality, provide you the concepts & strategies of song-writing. In short, provide you with the BIG PICTURE in 1 day.

After which, you'll create a song using the proven formula and attend the 4 Masterclasses. The professional trainers (industry veterans) will support you to polish your song to make it commerically-viable!

Once the song is created, we will complete your songs by providing Enhanced Demo (for 2 songs), with demo singers and music arrangements for the finishing touch. This is to ensure, your song is presented in its best to deliver to recording companies for pitching!

As an apprentice in this programme, you have full access and support to the following for 2 Years.

Time flies... Since our conceptualization of an accelerated programme to fit the lifestyle of the modern Singaporeans in 2009, this year, we managed to run 2 batches of Guitar ExpressWay!

Yeah! We have reached one of our goals set out in 2010!

Guitar ExpressWay is a 2-day accelerated programme, enabling the students to achieve self-directed learners after 2-day programme!

And boy, it has achieved amazing results for the graduates!

We have witnessed a total beginner (never touched guitar before) being able to play and sing a song on stage in front of an audience in just 3 weeks when she first touched the guitar.
Some months later, she even started to write songs using the knowledge she acquired through the course too!

We have also seen an experienced player, achieving breakthroughs from long years of stagnant state! And now, he is imparting what he knows to his 9-year old son!

Amazing stories! ...There are more.. Like those who performed for their own weddings, their son's weddings...we can go on & on...

It's these stories, that made us much more confident of the value this programme delivers to the graduates.

With an initial simple objective - to create an alternative music learning experience to music enthusiasts other than weekly music lessons, it has accomplished much more to our delight.

We are glad to see such results.

We are currently co-organising with SAFRA on a nationwide singing competition - SAFRA PK Challenge 2011. Back from the overwhelming response in the augural competition held in 2009, this time round, we gathered major partners to make this an even more successful one!

KTVCLUB PK CHALLENGE - EPISODE 03

The battlefield which aims to give challengers a chance to show off their singing enthusiasms and talents to a higher stage.

PK Challenge comprises a series of breath taking moments. Special themes are being introduced at each episode. Our panel of Professional Judges will then select a team of winners and get them prepared to the Grand Finals. The interesting part is that all the challengers will never know who their opponent is until the very last moment!

In this Last Episode, 20 Finalists will face challenges from Winners of Episode Two and PK one another on stage. Judges will issue a list of Mandarin Pop Songs for the contestants to select with. This list will only be reveal to the chosen candidates after the auditions.

The exciting part is Winners of PK 3 will join in the Past Episode Winners to fight at the Ultimate PK Challenge Showdown on 16th of April 2011!

Then the SAFRA PK Challenge is for you!

SAFRA PK Challenge is a singing competition that will be conducted only in Mandarin and is open to all Singaporeans and PRs, male and female aged 18 years and above.

The competition will be held in three rounds, over three weeks and two locations. Singers stand to walk away with more than $10,000 worth of prizes; including $1,000 cash for the champion. An Artiste Performer contract will be offered to the most deserving singer too!

A*Mei Themed Concert - 26 Nov 2010

On 26 Nov, it was time for our quarterly themed concert, put up by our student performers and instructors.

This theme - A*Mei, really got everyone, very excited!

...Our student performers from Hark Performing Team put up a great show...

...Many instructors took time out to practice and delivered a great show...

... and the audience!!! They were totally very participative and I saw everyone had smiles on their faces the entire whole night.

It was yet again another FULL-HOUSE that evening! Everyone was bustling with energy, waiting for the show to start.

It was also another great event for fellow-Hark students to catch up and mingle around!

The 2 hosts that evening.. Melvin (left) and Jack （right). It was their maiden collaboration, hosting together but all of us was impressed! The chemistry brought big smiles and hearty laughter to us!

In total, we did 16 songs that night!

Jack & Kiang Liang on all smiles… As a group of girls among the audience are cheering for Sherrie (on keyboard). Jack was getting the girls to do a ‘加油口号’ for the vocalist, Kiang Liang… ‘bribing’ for a 豆花supper in return!

Gamingly, they played on!

Hahaa… That definitely brought more confidence to their performance!

That evening, Shaun was all cheeky, imitating Jam Hsiao the entire night… and got everyone bursting into laughters… and got the hosts – jammed, when interviewing!

A very impressive performance ~ The crowd was in awe.

Another A-mei’s very classics song - 解脱 performed by Caleb & Rei.
Caleb and Rei did a twist to the song – they added jazz feel to this song. It brought a very refreshing feel to it!

Both Caleb and Rei, adding their own touch to the song, making it very original.

Oh yeah, a very big group – a band! Shawn on guitar, Rei on bass, Liling on keyboard, Raymond on drums, Maggie on vocals!

THE REAL SINGER Artiste Development Course Phase 1 Completion!

Phase 1 of THE REAL SINGER 实在歌手 Artiste Development Course
12 weeks of trainings for our 18 Artistes-In-Progress (AIPs) are finally completed.

They have been through vocal trainings, performances and recording sessions...
Through the recording & filming by Yellob.us (visit them at http://www.yellob.us - Singapore 1st Online Reality Portal), it definitely gave them a good feel of how the music industry works, how to face the media and such...

...and for the voting part of their performance evaluation clips which was open to the public for popularity votes in yellob.us....

In this entertainment industry, having the talent is never enough, having good 人脉 (simply said- 'good PR skills', even among your friends... :)) is also essential to survive in this stiff competition.

During the Final Phase Evaluation held on 9 Oct, all the AIPs gave their best and showed their performance versatility through 2 songs. The Final Evaluation stands a heavy percentage on their final scoring - 40%...

The total scores accumulated in Phase 1 will determine the TOP 12 who will be proceeding to Phase 2. Their Phase 1 Results will be based on the following:

Mid-Phase Scoring (upon 20%) + Mid-Phase Voting (upon 10%) + Final-Phase Scoring (40%) + Final-Phase Voting (10%) + Vocal Recording (20%)

So, after totalling all the scores together, the Top 12 AIPs proceeding to Phase 2 are...

On 29th August, we held a Songwriter Enthusiast's Workshop and it was a full-house!

It was a very interesting session, where we shared...
✔ The tools & components you need to start composing!
✔ Effective strategies to write outstanding lyrics!
✔ The process of writing all-time favourites - 爱和承诺 & 关怀方式!
✔ The current trend of pop music market and write songs record companies want!
✔ Step-by-step formula to transform a raw idea to a polished end-product!

50 participants came and learnt the strategies and winning formulas to write a commerical-viable song!

One highlight was, we wrote a chorus of the song together with the participation of the entire audience, creating the melody & lyrics right from scratch - ALL in just 20 mins!

It was an eye-opener for all on how a song can be pieced up!

Here are what the participants have commented after attending the workshop:

During the workshop, we launched an 2-Year Apprenticeship to support avid local songwriters. It received overwhelming response! ... & 2 recruitments were FULL!

We have now decided to launch to this exceptional programme to the PUBLIC for the 3rd recruitment! Only available to 6 apprentices.

1. I have got no/a little music experience, can I join?
This apprenticeship is catered to beginners too. As long as you have basic sense in identifying pitch & rhythm, we welcome you to start your song writing journey!

2. Do you use keyboard or guitar to teach?
We primarily use keyboards to impart the ideas due to the convenience of the instrument (the keyboard is all ‘layout’ for easy referencing). However, if you are more familiar with playing the guitar, you can also choose to use them too. Our trainers are also familiar with guitar-playing, therefore it would not be an issue on delivering the song composing strategies and concepts.

3. What does the 8 lesson course covers?
The 8 lesson will cover more all the strategies taught & step-by-step proven formulas. Most importantly, our trainers will guide you through the entire song writing process from generating an initial idea to producing a demo.

4. I write English Songs, is this course suitable for me?
For lyric-wise, we will be only able to advice better on Mandarin. In all, we are more focused in the Chinese market. However, there are a couple of songs initially written as an English song sold to China, Taiwan market with a substitute to a set of Chinese lyrics to suit the market.

5. How long is the coaching sessions & how big is the class?
The class size is maintained at a small number, between 4-6 students and is conducted 1.5 hours weekly.

6. What are the networks I can publish my songs?
We have connections to China & Taiwan major publishing companies. Most of the artistes you heard over the radio are ‘covered’ through these publishing houses. Our connections have once sold songs to artistes like ‘劉德華, Hebe (S.H.E.), 迷路兵, Xazz 薇恩, 孫楠、夏日风采, 草蜢, etc..’

7. Do I have to sign to Hark Music for song publishing?
No. You will work as a freelance writer. When we help you to publish a song, you will only sign the song to us.

THE REAL SINGER 实在歌手 Artiste Development Course 2010 has successfully commenced and 18 talented singers are selected to go through this very special programme where at least 1 of them will release an EP album for local commercial release!

This 6-month course is divided into 2 phases, 3 months each.
Now, all are currently under the Phase 1 training.

Yes, trainings are definitely tough and demanding. We are very strict on getting them ready for the gruelling entertainment industry too.

Throughout the 6-months, there will be evaluations amidst performing & recording sessions... Plus, online voting is essential to determine their popularity among viewers!
All thanks to our Official Online Media - www.yellob.us, who has been very supportive of local arts, coming down to Hark to film all their training process.

I am currently a full time student in Singapore Institute of Management. Soccer and working out in gym is my favorite pass time besides playing music. Overall I am quite an outgoing guy and enjoy the company of my friends. Although I am a beginner in playing guitar but I do compose some songs myself too which I would really like to share with people. The only obstacle is that I don’t have the proper equipments to do proper recording. Sometimes out of the blue moon a melody would just come across my head and I would use my hand phone to record it down. After that I would go home and use my guitar to play some simple chords for the melody before consulting my friend who is very good at guitar to teach me the proper way to play my song. The only competition I ever take part is the pk safra challenge which is organize by hark music last year. My friends had urged me to try it out just for experience. I was quite shock that I had gone all the way to the finals and won the "Mr Popular" and all the credits would go to my friends that has supported me throughout. I remember how nervous I am when I am on the stage. I took part in the The Real Singer because it can relinquish my wish to let people outside to listen to my songs and hopefully I can go all the way. I believe that I have a deep and powerful vocal chords which is more suitable towards rock songs although I love to sing love songs too. I would like to take up vocal lessons in future to improve my technique and that's what the judge had told before.

I am currently a lead vocalist in a band called 6 degrees wipeout. We do covers of rock and alternative music and we write and play our own songs too. I was second placed in a singing competition in the Singapore Navy and have not looked back on performing since. I have tremendous passion in writing lyrics and get the most inspiration when I am overseas away from the familiar environment. I have written several songs with the band and have other projects in the works. Drumming is a small part that I have to play in the band and if have to I have to play the tambourine as well. My school choir days have been long gone and of course my taste in music has evolved from listening to Pop music to listening to a variety of rock, alternative, ambience and different sounds as versatility as a singer is very vital in the entertainment scene. I'm a very emotional person. Most of the times my emotions control me. Music has been something very close to spirituality for me since young. It has always been my solace when I'm unhappy and it never fails to help me get through any situations in my life. I first started to perform when I joined Campus Superstar 2009 and got signed by an artist management which brought my performing experience further. I then ventured into fashion design and started designing clothes for other labels. On 10 July 2010, Hark's students were invited to perform at Plaza Singapura for Singapore Street Festival event - U@Shine!

Before heading to Plaza Singapore (which is very near to our school), we arranged a short rehearsal session at our Performing Studio to warm-up all the students. We also did a full run of our 45-min performance sequence.

It was exceptionally helpful for some students like Hendra, Kit Yee and Elina as it was their maiden public performance!

The performing stage was located at the outdoor area of Plaza Singapura.

Lots of crowds~ (definitely lots of jitters for the '1st-timers')
People coming out from the MRT stations, Plaza Singapura and the bus-stop... It was lots of buzzz...

We say...Great exposure!

Singapore Street Festival is an initiative by the National Youth Council to promote performing to youths. It creates opportunities for youths to take part, expose themselves and to experience as a performer.

Graduation Concert

I say it was more of a BREAKTHROUGH Concert than a Graduation Concert cause it's just the beginning of their guitaring journey!

We had many total beginners in this batch. And believe it or not, they performed on stage in just 4 weeks from the start of Day 1....

All have achieved 'un-imaginable' breakthroughs.

From a total beginner, to be able to play their chosen songs on stage is definitely not an easy feat. And mind you, they were not easy songs to begin with!

When our instructors heard what they hope to play... Jaws Dropped!
Songs like "More than words, You raise me up, I'm Yours...."

Hey, those are songs beginners should not even try to attempt... not to mention they have to perform them in such a short span!

But...

It's so heartening to see all of them achieving the impossible. Though some are not entirely perfect, it is un-doubtingly an amazing achievement not many are willing to commit.

To play guitar in just 1 month and learn all the strategies and knowledge to become a self-directed learner.

We acknowledged that they themselves put in much hard work and effort to be where they are now!

That's the spirit of this programme!

Jiang Yang & Le Sheng Song Composing Sharing Session@Hark

We held a song composing sharing session 《创作其实并不难》 for an upcoming singer-songerwriter, Jiang Yang 姜洋 on 22 March 2010.

It's a FREE admission event - Jiang Yang shared about his composing experiences and knowledge gained throughout the years. This event also featured a special guest appearance - Zhang Le Sheng 张乐声, who has written countless songs, for 杨丞琳, 蔡淳佳, 郭美美, 潘嘉丽, many more & has won 2 Mediacorp’s STAR AWARDS 红星大奖 in 2004 & 2007 “最佳主题曲” for his composition works 《跟着我一起》― 电视剧《宝家卫国》主题曲 & 《爱在身旁》― 电视剧《我爱我家》主题曲.

The lovely female host - Hua Jing, first introduced him to the audience and of course, not forgetting to mention about his newly launched album~~~it has already achieved more than 10,000 sales! In just 1-week of release in China!

Next up, he performed! Self-accompanied vocal with just a keyboard.

He was dynamic!
'Cause he did not only sang and played the keyboard, he also added in the drums, strings, etc to make the arrangements sound fuller. All self-controlled live!
That's for sure not an easy task but..... he managed it well!
And best of all, he sang with FEEL~~~

He performed 2 songs, of which were both his own compositions.

Next up, the host wittingly, went around to 'catch' someone to comment on these 2 songs he performed.

and guess, what?.......

Well... Amos is not one who is unfamiliar with such situations, as he usually gave lots & lots of comments and feedback to Hark students and performers.....

And so..... he started....

... then, followed on, started discussing on his opinions for the comments given....

... then, more comments.....

Till, the host reminded of his 职业病！

Hahahaaa.......Thanks, 校长!

Next up, Jiang Yang continued to share more on his composing ideas and inspiration.

He also shared on how the 'marriage' between melody and lyrics can come about.

Everyone listened intently...

Yes, we enlightened us some. The audience also participated in asking some questions...

Followed on, we welcomed the very special guest appearance - Zhang Le Sheng!
He rarely made appearance like this to share his 心得 with music enthusiasts.

I would say, we are all blessed to have him on this very event!

He's actually quite a shy person.....

The host had to get him to stand in the middle of the stage a few times! (as he started drifting, taking a few steps sideways after a few sentences in conversation...hahaa...)

During sound-check an hour before the event commencement then, the host 'bugged' Lesheng to sing a song. (Trust me, this was not planned at all!)

In case you don't know, Lesheng was a regular performer in his younger days in various places and he was also one of the finalists in Project SuperStar 2.

After much persuasion, it was all decided in the very last minute!
So, there was no pre-recorded music.... we got to find an instrumentalist - ON THE SPOT!!!

In our luck, we managed to get one of our pop piano instructor, Rei Lim to perform alongside with him. They only get to rehearse the song in just 5 minutes flat backstage!

He brought us, his rendition of 大城小爱 (王力宏).

He mesmerized everyone! Everyone was in awe! It was a flawless performance!!!!!
Believe it or not, there was an encore request from the audience!!!!

Pity, Lesheng could not bring us more...as it was totally un-prepared.
Hopefully, we can have the chance to bring him back again for another event! This time, I am sure we will get him to bring us more tunes! ;)

After the performance, Lesheng gave us more insights on making your lyrics more 'sellable'. Having sold countless of his lyrical works to local and foreign music acts, he definitely has vast knowledge and had a lot to share.

His 15-minutes sharing was indeed a very enriching session.
Saw many copying down his mentioned pointers....

The last segment of the event boosted one of the very special highlight of this entire event.

Both Jiang Yang and Le Sheng was entrusted to compose a song, right from the scratch to prove that 创作其实并不难！

Hark Music is proud to present a song composing sharing session for an up & coming singer-songwriter - 姜洋, Jiang Yang.
Other than to impress you with his powerful vocal performances, he will also be sharing his composing experiences and knowledge gained through the years.

Jiang Yang recently released his debut album and has achieved more than 10,000 record sales within a week of release in China. Last week, he was invited to perform in 新加坡e乐大赏》at The Float@Marina Bay on 13 March 2010, alongside with regional stars 陈奕迅, 梁文音, Olivia Ong, JJ林俊杰, ,韩国组合SHINee, 蔡健雅, 林宥嘉, and many more.

Jiang Yang started learning music at a very young age. Wih his excellent piano skills, he started taking part in many competitions and went through many obstacles that caused him to evolve from a passionate young musician to a refined singer-song writer.

Not only being the producer of his album, Jiang Yang composed 4 of the songs and had written lyrics for 7 songs for his debut album <将。阳> which received very good comments from critics.
His debut album was released in China on 19th January 2010 and has achieved over 10,000 copies within the first week of its release.

One of the programme, which we held a few previews back in January will be commencing soon in 20 March - Accelerated Guitar Mastery! We are caught up in preparation after the CNY break.

We had such good response this time round, compared to our inaugural batch in last September 2009. It was a 200% increase in the enrolments. *Claps, claps, celebrate!*

We were overwhelmed! Thank you!!!
And yes....with this, we are even more eager to impart all we can and all we have, to everyone in this 1-month intensive course!

We are definitely going to create another 'WOW' this time round!

Talking about the previews in January, we really got to thank our past AGM graduates for rendering their support in this event and taking their precious time out to perform and share their learning journey to everyone. I believe, that is one of the important moments during the preview. People see the results in our graduates.

All right, enough of the Accelerated Guitar Mastery programme....

Now, our music director, instructors and our performers are now very busy preparing & rehearsing for a performance item in an 3,500 strong charity concert, which will be held on 20 March, Saturday (yes, it coincides with the 1st day of the Accelerated Guitar Mastery...)!

We will be preparing for an acoustic medley segment of over 15 songs.
This concert will be publicize through various print medium. Once the news is out, I will post in this blog to share with everyone!

Oh yes, another exciting project:
Soon, we will be launching a programme, in collaboration with strategic partners such a EQ Music (record label), Red Planet (production house) & PartyWorld KTV.
I believe this programme will sure to excite you! Not only us!

There were many performance invitations for Hark Performers in Jan 2010.
We were so glad and excited!!!

We were invited by Ngee Ann Poly to put up a performance during their 2010 Open House on 9th Jan 2010.
Also, Citispa invited us again to perform for their roadshows on both Saturday and Sunday, 9th and 10th Jan 2010.

Oh, it's going to be a busy weekend!

Next week, 16th Jan (SAT), we will be performing in SAFRA Roadshow at SUNTEC City (outside Carrefour). It will be an hour's performance from 7-8pm.
Other than HPT performances, there will also be instructors' performances! Teng Teng (vocal instructor) and Jane (piano instructor) will be putting up a performance of 2 songs.

Happening! Happening! HAPPENING!!!

It was sooo hot that Saturday afternoon.

'Hot' not as in the weather...
(Yes, the recent weather is really terribly warm and humid but I don't mean that...
We were all in the air-conditioned Mount Faber Clubhouse Lobby....how hot can we be?....Haha...)

...but in terms of the PK atmosphere!!! It was one of the memorable climax in this whole competition!

After listening to 8 fast numbers (songs were noted to have at least 100 beats per minute), such as 'Bad Boy', '热情的沙漠‘，’恋爱ing','Super No. 1',...... the atmosphere was so hyped-up, we saw people tapping along, swaying along and even screamed!!!

The 8 singers were required to sing 80's or earlier song releases and deliver them in their own way!

We got to enjoy really 'happening' songs! 大眼睛，我要你的爱，十五的月亮，热情的沙漠....
The audience was getting very hot and cheered along!!!

And remember we invited 2 external challengers?

..... Both of them successfully 'killed' 2 singers and sent them to !

First up - We had Roy Lim, who is a regular performer and a competitions go-er who had won many champions. He was once a regular vocalist in an local unplugged cafe too.

Second - We had Xazz 微恩. She was spotted in 2006 in a nationwide talent competition - NUS Rhapsody and had released an self-titled album in end 2007. Her next album is due to release in these few months' time, comprising of a duet, recorded together with 迷路兵.

SAFRA PK Challenge Round 1

Last Saturday, we witnessed Round One of the debut SAFRA PK Challenge at SAFRA Mount Faber Clubhouse.

It was a nice, sunny afternoon... and with the stage set-up, just beside the swimming pool, we just couldn't resist wanting to take a dip in the pool! ....All right, jokes aside.

Well, it was the 1st time for us to hear these singers out. Truthfully, all the 12 singers are really strong singers! We had such an entertaining afternoon.

The theme for that round was '拿手歌曲Their Signature Song'.

Well, it's not hard to guess why... it's the first time these 12 strong singers meet the 'audience', so of course they must show the best to everyone, isn't it. :)

We were enjoyed listening to very challenging songs such as, 黑色幽默，勇敢，不能说的秘密，真的，曲终人散，etc...

..... and the PK fights were close！We kept seeing, 2 strong singers meeting each other. We even had a draw fight....but still, we had to determine a winner and a loser.

Graduation Concert - Accelerated Guitar Mastery!

Our Inaugural Accelerated Guitar Mastery 3-day Programme Graduation Concert was conducted on 4th October to a full-house in Performing Studio@Hark.

It was definitely an exciting day for the 8 students.

After going through an intensive 3 full day programme, they were all geared up, ready and totally enthusiastic to present their graduation songs to their family and friends!

We have Amy, Max and TengTeng, all total beginners in guitaring when you flashed back just 4-weeks ago, performing ‘Heaven’, ‘Yellow’, 矜持 by Faye respectively.

…and we have Travis, Jelina, Albert, Eugene, Benedict who all had prior guitaring background (some has learnt more than 10 yrs), performing Girl from Ipanema, 让我想一想, 海阔天空, 一百种生活 and If tomorrow never comes.

All cheers were on them!

At the same time, we were very glad to receive very positive feedback and testimonials from the students themselves after the entire programme.

SAFRA PK Challenge starts this Saturday (10 Oct)!

Twelve finalists have been selected!

Round One starts this Saturday (10 Oct) 2-5pm, at Mount Faber SAFRA Clubhouse!

There will be 5 rounds from 10, 17, 24, 31 Oct and 7 Nov.
The Grand Finals is at 14 Nov, at KBOX Cineleisure!

As the name suggests, this is a PK Challenge, meaning ‘Player Kill’. Singers will face-off with another opponent. Winner stays and loser face the possibility of elimination at the end of the round.

Another exciting element of this event is there will be various themes for all the rounds.

Round 1 (10 Oct): 我的代表歌曲
Round 2 (17 Oct): 外语歌曲 (English, Canto, Malay)
Round 3 (24 Oct): 老歌新唱
Round 4 (31 Oct): 动感快歌

Featured HPT Performer: Lim Jing Hui

How do you feel when you have been shortlisted for HPT?
Unbelievable and excited to embark on this new musical journey. I can utilize the skills I have learnt and continue improving.

What song did you present during your HPT audition and why did choose that song?
I did a total of 3 songs! 最近 for the 1st audition, 天黑黑 and我要快乐 for the 2nd audition. No particular reasons for choosing the songs, but those were the songs I’ve learnt in class.

Do you see improvements so far in yourself after joining HPT?
Definitely, in all aspects. Listening back to the recording of my very 1st performance in HPT, it sounded so awful then. Haha! Thanks to Amos for the valuable comments, which help us to improve our skills and Jane for her ongoing guidance, even though, I have completed the pop piano course. =D

If you have a choice to team up with an instructor for a performance, who will it be? And why?
Vocalist or Guitarist? If it’s a vocalist, it would be Maggie because I love the way she presents a song, full of variations and she is my vocal instructor. If it’s a guitarist, it would be Amos (Music director) because his playing is really cool and inspiring.

What do you look forward to achieve with your team-mates within this year?
This year is ending soon, looking forward to have a wider range of song genres.

What do you think is the most important that a performer should have?
Attitude is the most important aspect. A performer with the finest skills without a proper attitude and mindset will be deficient.
Being humble and willing to learn, not being over complacent of what you have, because learning has no limits. Likewise, being receptive to feedbacks is also important for a performer to advance to the next higher level.

What makes you decide to join Hark Music?
The content of Hark’s website portrayed its professionalism and this created an attraction to people in believing its capability. Oh, I remembered, I enquired through email and their reply was very efficient and detailed.

What benefits you the most while attending the lessons with Hark Music?
It is the place where I acquired my playing and singing skills. Thanks to the great instructors, Jane and Maggie for their guidance, which have instilled a stronger music passion in me. Lessons with them make learning easier and fun always.

Describe a memorable experience in Hark Music.
It was during the cafe days when I would be there every weekend with my group of friends. The atmosphere was great and the live band session was really inspiring.

What do you like most about Hark Music?
It is a place like home, a big family. The cozy environment, the friendly staffs/ instructors and what’s more, the free usage of rooms for practice.

Any comments/feedbacks about the school for our readers?

It is almost the end of the current cycle of the Skills Improvement Programme (SIP) for our Hark Student Performers!

Time flies, don't you agree?

HPT Batch 3 Students who entered this initiative in June 2009 are going for their first grading in end of this month! Woww wow wow.....

Since the past months, we have seen many commitments from the HPT members. Coming to Hark weekly for their practices, coming to the OpenStage programmes for performances trainings... and truthfully, we do see much improvements and great potential in them!

In August, we have conducted a FREE Workshop for all the student performers as part of the 3-month programme. During that workshop, our Music Director, Amos Teo shared and taught on:

1. On-Stage Communication: Leaving a good impression with what you say
2. Song Presentation: Setting the style and mood of the song
3. Music Arrangement: Coordination between the guitarist and the keyboardist

Debut SAFRA PK Challenge 2009

Coming Saturday will be the 1st audition date for all the singing enthusiasts to come and pit their skills and vie for the places in the 6-PK-rounds.

Many would ask "What is PK?"
It simply means 'Player-Kill' where one will blindly-pick another opponent and both will face off with their prepared song. Judges will give their scores independently of each other to determine the winner of that face-off.

Winner stays in the competition.
Loser goes to a loser zone, where a possibility of a elimination may surface.

This competition format is fresh and keeps all contestants on their toes, as they never know who they are going to compete with.

PLUS, there is this mystery element in this event - External Challengers!
...Yes, we are not going to reveal who they are, till the actual competition starts.

The actual competition will be starting on 10 Oct (every Saturday) 3-5pm at SAFRA@Mount Faber. Finals will be on 14 Nov at KBox Cineleisure.

..and did I mention that there are many fabulous prizes to be won?

Our Sep09 Featured Performer - Jack Lim!

How do you feel when you have been shortlisted for HPT?
I felt really fortunate to be part of this experience. I’ve always wanted to perform in a live band. Furthermore, I got to be in the same team with Marvin, whom I auditioned with.

What song did you present during your HPT audition and why did choose that song?
I did 寂寞的季节 by David Tao together with Marvin. We both like that song and it sounds really good on a solo guitar.

Do you see improvements so far in yourself after joining HPT?
You bet. My song dynamics and control have improved over time. I appreciate the kind gesture by Amos (our Music Director) who not only let us use the Performance Studio for practice every week but also spend time with us to correct our flaws and mistakes.

Give me a quote that your teammates always say about you.
“Jack, you sang the wrong lyrics again!”

If you have a choice to team up with an instructor for a performance, who will it be? And why?
It depends. If it’s with an instrumentalist, I hope to team up with Shawn (my guitar instructor) and if it’s a vocalist, I hope to do a song with Xin Yun (my vocal instructor). To me, they’re the best of the best in Hark Music.

What do you look forward to achieve with your team-mates within this year?
We have actually been talking about this amongst ourselves for a while. Personally I hope we can develop a team character which differentiates us from the other teams through the music we present to the audience.

What do you think is the most important that a performer should have?
A disciplined work ethic. I believe most things do not happen by chance and to perform well, one needs to be committed and practice hard. It would, of course, take up some time but life is all about choices. You reap what you sow.

How did you find out about Hark Music?
I have always had a passion for music but haven’t really had the time during my studies to take up any course. When I started working and had some free time in the evenings, I decided to enroll in one and came across Hark’s website during a web search.

What makes you decide to join Hark Music?
First of all, I was drawn by Hark’s website which was unlike any others I had seen. I thought if these people bothered to put so much effort in their websites, it goes to show a lot about the attitudes towards their work as well. Upon reading the course descriptions and the programs offered, I felt Hark was just the right place for me.

Describe a memorable experience in Hark Music.
Definitely my first performance! I remember I was supposed to sing 戒不掉 by Harlem Yu at the ground level café (now renovated to become a studio) for my first stage performance and I was so worried about not being able to hit some notes of the song that my hand was trembling before that. To get us ready, Xin Yun did some warmup sessions with us prior to the performance and I was glad it turned out well in the end.

What do you like most about Hark Music?
The conducive learning environment. Not only does Hark Music have an extensive library for students to refer to, but also provides rooms for students to practice by themselves before lessons.

Any comments/feedbacks about the school for our readers?
If you’re looking for teachers who can be inspirations, Hark Music is definitely worth your consideration!

We had emails coming in the following day, just to appreciate the contents we have prepared, sharing with us, how much they have gained in just a few hours!

It is heartwarming to know that we've managed to share as much as we can, to music enthusiasts like you out there!

A workshop for HPT... Now released, 30 slots to you as observers!

This Saturday (29 Aug), we will be organising a 3-Hr workshop to our HPT members, as part of their 3-month Skills Development Cycle!

Interesting topics gonna be touched on... to improve on pianists & guitarists' playing and coordination skills as well as vocalists' stage presence....

It's going to be a very enlightening session, with real-life demonstrations on:

1. On-Stage Communication: Leaving a good impression with what you say
2. Song Presentation: Setting the style and mood of the song
3. Music Arrangement: Coordination between the guitarist and the keyboardist

Our Music Director, Amos Teo will be on the guitar and our Pop Piano Instructor, Jane Wu will be on the keyboard, to bring the addressed points across through inspiring music performances!

How did you find out about Hark Music?
I was watching Channel U one day and there was a feature on Hark Music in one of the programmes. As the vision coincides with mine, I’ve decided to call up and find out more about the courses available.

What benefits you the most while attending the lessons with Hark Music?
I learnt how to play a guitar! My lifetime dream since school days… This shows that it’s never too late to learn something that you aspire to. Although I don’t play that well, it’s still fulfilling that dream of mine which I will live to remember.

What do you like most about Hark Music?
The classes are taught using the latest pop songs which we all can relate to, instead of those classical ones, which bore the hell out of me. And through the Saturday Open Stages, students get to showcase their talents and experience stage performances to the public! After getting into the Hark Performing Team, not only I get to perform on stage again, I also made even more friends… friends who share the same passion… MUSIC! Regardless of how busy we are, we will get together and practise for our upcoming gigs.

Who is your favorite artiste and why?
I listen songs from all genres and languages… so it’s difficult to single out one favourite artiste… If you’re talking about Chinese Pop, it has to be Lee Hom; if Latin, it has to be Louis Miguel; Opera has to be Andre Bocelli and Sarah Brightman; and the list goes on…

How many performance have you done so far?
If it’s singing, since school days I had a band, we perform for all school events; Then I took part in countless karaoke competitions from 1998 to 2003 for both English and Mandarin categories; I performed in a 民歌餐厅 before; performed in countless numbers of weddings, parties and functions and now here I am, in Hark Performing Team!

Is your dream career related to music?
I wish to cut an album one day… although I’ve recorded quite a number of demos already but none are my songs! Sobs! So I have to work hard, earn loads of money and then start my own recording label for good singers who don’t have the looks! 实力派rules!!!

How do you feel when you have been shortlisted for HPT?
Yay! I can realize my passion in singing again!
What song did you present during your HPT audition and why did choose that song?
回家by顺子. Chose that song because it is an extremely difficult song to sing because of the wide range. I always love that song because of the music arrangement and how it evokes my feelings when I sing it.

Do you see improvements so far in yourself after joining HPT?
Yes because of the constant training, my vocal delivery and pitching improved a lot. And I’ve also managed to reach higher notes now like the high notes of 离歌.
If you have a choice to team up with an instructor for a performance, who will it be? And why?
I already have an instructor in our band! Haha… But if anyone else would be David. Reason is, his choice of songs are pretty close to mine.

How did you find out about Hark Music?
Hark Music was the most affordable music school that offers vocal lesson during my time, which was around 2002.

What makes you decide to join Hark Music?
I searched through the Internet, newspapers and even community centers to find the most equipped and affordable music schools then. Shortly, I found out that Hark Music was organizing a vocal workshop so I gathered my friends to attend. The workshop had given a new idea in singing and I was inspired by the instructor who did the 靠近 by Harlem. From then on, I’ve found out my deepest interest in singing.

What benefits you the most while attending the lessons with Hark Music?
I’ve gained vast knowledge on the fundamentals of singing, song expression and stage presence. I’ve made friends who share the same interest. Most importantly, I’ve improved my vocals.

Describe a memorable experience in Hark Music.
The fun learning sessions with the instructor, doing silly actions like lips trills, funny noises/sounds and amusing expressions which my peers made while attempting vocal exercises made me recall all the old good times.

What do you like most about Hark Music?
I like the environment and the coziness of school. I also enjoy the added facilities where students are able to borrow CDs , photocopy guitar tabs and use the facilities for practice.

Any comments/feedbacks about the school for our readers?
Hark Music is the place for music lovers who wish to learn and know all about pop music. It is also a place which provides opportunities for music lovers to come together through the regular school activities.

Is your dream career related to music?
I wish to be an instructor so that I can share my passion and joy for singing. Not everyone can do the things they like and earn a steady income.

Do you see improvements so far in yourself after joining HPT?
Yes, of course, majorly in terms of coordinating and singing with a band. There is a lot coordination work to be done. Working in a team, we have to understand and compromise with one another.

If you have a choice to team up with an instructor for a performance, who will it be? And why?
Alex, I like his passion for singing and I know he truly enjoys himself when he sings.
Wait, I would love to sing a duet with Xin Yun too. She is just so amazing. Being a student in Hark for so long, that evening at Marina Square was the first time I heard her sing a full song. I was touched.

What do you look forward to achieve with your team-mates within this year?
Increase our repertoire and take our music to a new level in terms of trying new styles.

What do you think is the most important aspect a performer should have?
The attitude to learn. Singing, like many other subjects, can’t be mastered. Therefore, you need to constantly experiment, learn, listen and observe others’ performances. Listen to people’s comments and feedbacks and try to experiment on things you have not tried to upgrade yourself. You will definitely see results.

Being humble and grateful are also important. Don’t get too full of yourself from every compliment. Just treat them as bonuses to keep you going. Every comments and disappointments is the reason for you to move forward.
